Chapter Summaries Chapter 1: Ode to Mothers A much-loved song based on Shin’ichi’s poem “Mother” is completed in August 1976. That summer, Shin’ichi and his family visit his ailing mother, who dies in September. Memories of her strong, pure life flood Shin’ichi’s mind. Chapter 2: Vigilant Safeguarding Shin’ichi works closely with the Gajokai, Soka Group, and Byakuren—behind-the-scenes training groups—to foster youth who could support and protect the members. The Year of Study, 1977, begins with Shin’ichi’s lecture on “The True Aspect of All Phenomena.” Chapter 3: Humanistic Education The Soka Gakkai aims to strengthen the front lines of the organization through a series of guidance meetings. Members of the education department initiate educational counseling programs and parenting classes for the public.
