Chapter Summaries Chapter 1: Westward Transmission In January 1961, embarks on a journey to India and Southeast Asia as a step to fulfill the westward transmission of Buddhism that Nichiren had prophesied. He forms a district in Hong Kong, expressing his hopes that from there they can send the “light of happiness and peace to all of Asia.” Chapter 2: India Shin’ichi and his group visit various sites in India, including Raj Ghat, where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. He reflects on Gandhi’s nonviolent struggle. At Bodhgaya, where Shakyamuni attained enlightenment, they’re granted permission to bury a time capsule with significant items related to their determination to achieve kosen-rufu in Asia. Chapter 3: Buddha Shin’ichi’s thoughts turn to Shakyamuni’s life and search to overcome the fundamental human sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death. After his enlightenment, Shakyamuni turns to sharing his wisdom with others until the final moments of his life, having to face and overcome obstacles all along the way. Chapter 4: Light of Peace In Burma (now Myanmar), Shin’ichi thinks of his eldest brother who died there during World War II and chants for him and all who died in the war.
