Chapter Summaries Chapter 1: A New Century At a commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of Josei Toda’s release from prison, Shin’ichi speaks of Toda’s visionary ideal of global citizenship. He also begins exchanges with two prominent Japanese, including the legendary founder of electronics giant Panasonic, Konosuke Matsushita. Chapter 2: Currents SGI-USA’s Blue Hawaii convention takes place in Honolulu, replete with a floating island stage off Waikiki. Shin’ichi likens the “aloha spirit” with the Buddhist teaching of compassion and tolerance. Chapter 3: High Seas The Soka Gakkai’s High Seas Group, made up of merchant marine sailors, aims to invigorate the maritime shipping industry, which is suffering from the economic downturn.
